Trump Sends Negotiators to Islamabad for Round 2 of US-Iran Talks

Apr 20, 2026

The US is preparing for another attempt at diplomacy.

President Donald Trump has confirmed that a new delegation of US negotiators is being sent to Islamabad for a second round of talks with Iran, following the failure of earlier negotiations.

The move signals that, despite tensions and setbacks, diplomatic efforts are still ongoing at least for now.

What’s Happening This Time

The upcoming round is expected to take place in Islamabad again, with a high-level US team involved. Reports indicate that officials, including Vice President JD Vance, envoy Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner are part of the delegation.

This follows the first round of talks held earlier this month, which lasted more than 20 hours but ended without an agreement.

Pakistan is once again expected to play the role of mediator.

Why a Second Round Is Needed

The first round failed mainly due to major disagreements between the US and Iran.

Key sticking points included:

  • Iran’s nuclear programme
  • Sanctions relief and economic terms
  • Control and reopening of the Strait of Hormuz

Despite the failure, both sides left the door open for further talks, which is why a second round is now being pushed.

But There’s a Big Problem

While the US is moving ahead with preparations, Iran has signaled it may not even participate in the new talks.

Iranian officials have accused Washington of:

  • Making unrealistic demands
  • Violating the existing ceasefire
  • Maintaining a naval blockade in the region

This raises serious doubts about whether the second round will actually happen as planned.

Tensions Still High

The diplomatic push comes at a time when the situation remains fragile.

  • A two-week ceasefire is already under pressure
  • The Strait of Hormuz remains a major flashpoint
  • Military threats and rhetoric from both sides continue

In fact, US warnings of further action and Iran’s response have kept the risk of escalation very real.

Pakistan’s Role Continues

Pakistan remains central to the process.

It hosted the first round of talks and is again positioning itself as a neutral platform for dialogue. Preparations for a second round had already been underway even before Trump’s latest announcement.

This continues to place Pakistan in a key diplomatic position in a high-stakes global conflict.

What Happens Next

At this point, there are two possible outcomes:

  • Talks go ahead → diplomacy continues
  • Iran stays out → tensions rise again

Everything now depends on whether both sides are willing to return to the table.
